Many people are not sure what to do when a loved one passes away. The experience can be one of emotional trauma and confusion. We advise that the family immediately appoints an undertaker who should handle all matters pertaining to the funeral / Janaaza.
Below is some information pertinent to the burial of a loved one.
The Cemetery operational times are between 08:00 and 16:00 daily for visitations. The last Janaaza arrives at 16:00.
Kindly take special note that a Janaaza may not arrive earlier or later than the arrival times mentioned above. No burials will be allowed without a burial pass (receipt) issued by the Cemetery. New graves for burial is always available. Times of Janaaza arrivals at the cemetery is agreed upon by the supervisor on site and the undertaker.
Re-openings of a grave for subsequent burials can take up to 4 hours to prepare the grave hence 4 hours is required between the time of booking the grave until the arrival of the Janaaza. The cut off time to make such a booking for the grave is therefore not later than 12:00 noon on the day of the Janaaza.
It is compulsory for undertakers to provide all relevant documents upon booking of a grave which includes the following:
- Completed Form DHA-1663 A Notification of death/still-birth (with fingerprints)
- The stamp of the undertaker must reflect on all required documents
- A certified Copy of the Deceased’s Identity Document
- A certified copy of the Identity Document of the informant as per part D of DHA-1663
- For re-openings, an affidavit noting consent and such intent of subsequent burial by the Next of Kin of the deceased is to be provided. This affidavit must be commissioned by the South African Police. The Next of Kin must point out the grave to be reopened before or at the time of the booking. The affidavit must indicate the following details:
- Name and Surname of Applicant (Next of Kin requesting the re-opening).
- Applicant’s ID number.
- Applicant’s Address.
- Name and surname of the deceased who needs to be buried.
- ID number of the deceased.
- Address of the deceased.
- Name and surname of the person whose grave will be re-opened.
- ID number of the person whose grave will be re-opened (If available).
- The date of death of the person whose grave will be re-opened.
The cost of a new grave on weekdays is R2,100.00 (two thousand one hundred rand) The cost of a re-opening on weekdays is R2,100.00 (two thousand one hundred rand). The cost of a new grave or a re-opening on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and on Public Holidays is R2,500.00 (two thousand five hundred rand).
Take further note that the Cemetery Supervisor will only deal with undertakers for bookings and not members of the public. The undertaker may make use of a proxy who must present a letter confirming that the person acts as a proxy.
In addition, the letter must reflect the names and identity numbers of the undertaker and the proxy. Copies of the Identity Document of the undertaker and the proxy must be attached to the letter. A registered undertaker must be present at the time of burial.
