Dates for Community Cemetery Initiative at Mowbray Announced

Mowbray Cemetery has initiated a Community participation weekend where the public is invited to come out and be part of a joint clean-up operation. According to Chairman of the Moslem Cemetery Board, Faizal Sayed who is currently on a visit to Saudi Arabia, the dates for the initiative is set for Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October 2022.

The initiative supported by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC-SA) is set to be a focused weekend where the public is requested to partake in cleaning up, repairing, neatening and the upgrading of graves. The community will be urged to bring along their spades, bags, buckets and gloves and get involved in the initiative.

Present at the Cemetery on the weekend will be a range of service providers and Cemetery operational partners. Also participating are Buco Hardware, Things on Wheels, Bismillah on the Lounge and Good Hope Meat Hyper who will provide 500 meals over the weekend at no cost to participants.

According to Moslem Cemetery Board Member, Advocate and Councillor Shameemah Dollie-Salie, it is vital at this stage that graves are easily identifiable noting the current geo-tagging project which has been welcomed by the community nationally. “This is the responsibility of each of us if we would like graves to be identifiable for generations to come. Many graves are forgotten, tomb stones damaged over the years and names no longer visible”, said Salie. “The clean up day will provide an opportunity for us as a community to unite in remembrance of our loved ones who have left us”, concluded Salie.

Sheikh Riad Fataar, second Deputy President of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC-SA) said that the MJC welcomes the Community Cemetery Clean up initiative by Mowbray Cemetery. Fataar noted that “not everybody ensures that the graves of their family and loved ones are clean and looks in a respectable manner and therefore we welcome the initiative of Mowbray Cemetery”.  “If you are cleaning the grave of a loved one then do take the time to look around and attend to a grave that may be neglected that may not be that of a family member or friend. In this way we maintain the dignity and the honour of those who has passed on”, added Fataar. Families are welcome to attend.
