MOWBRAY CEMETERY INVITES THE PUBLIC TO PARTICIPATE IN CYPRESS TREE PROJECT
Mowbray Cemetery has launched an initiative to plant Cypress Trees along pathways and the Cemetery border walls as part of the many upgrade plans currently underway at the Cemetery. Trees have already been planted to test the viability of this project which showed much success. Mowbray Cemetery now invites the public to be part of the project by purchasing a Cypress tree for planting at designated locations.
Chairman of the Moslem Cemetery Board, Faizal Sayed said that, “There has been a tremendous amount of change and development happening in the Cemetery with numerous projects currently running. The Cypress Tree Campaign will certainly enhance the Cemetery. In a few months, the Cemetery launches the electronic GIS-based grave location system which has been in the making for many months. This project which is groundbreaking to say the least will allow loved one’s to find graves on a mobile application”.
The Cypress Stricta Tree in particular adds to the aesthetic value of this tranquil, monumental, and historical location. Mowbray Cemetery purchases the trees when small and grows them into the majestic trees they ought to be. This tree is iconic, and historical, and has a striking architectural presence in monumental locations like Mowbray Cemetery. The tree is an evergreen, vigorous, coniferous tree with a thin but dense fastigiate (almost pencil-like) form becoming broader with age. This particular cultivar has a dark green, scale-like stem-clasping leaves that are quite aromatic.
Be part of the Cypress Tree Project at Mowbray Cemetery by purchasing a tree for R300 that will grow in the Cemetery for many generations to come. Members of the public may even participate in the planting of the tree they purchased, assisted by a Cemetery staff member, in the location designated by the cemetery for the tree.
