In response to the ongoing challenge of limited burial space in both municipal and private cemeteries, including Mowbray Cemetery and others, and by giving effect to the the Muslim Judicial Council’s (MJC) Fatwa on reburials, we encourage families to reuse an existing grave after a period of 15 years has passed.
By doing so, we not only preserve the dignity and tradition of our burial practices but also make practical use of the space available. At the time of death of a loved one, families simply need to identify the grave which is 15 or more years old, complete the affidavit available at the cemetery, and the grave can be reopened accordingly.
It is important to know the location of family graves for this purpose. We encourage a visit to the Cemetery to locate family graves ahead of time in the event that such graves are needed.
